_Al-Azhar Mosque, Cape Town

Information

Al-Azhar Mosque in Cape Town, South Africa is considered the oldest mosque in District Six, as it was founded in 1887.  The mosque was a former hub of District 6’s Muslim population who were forcibly relocated in the 1960s. The Government has destroyed all building in the area except a few Churches and Mosques to act as a Memorial of what once was. Currently the mosque building is a place of worship for the displaced believers.

The design was inspired from the Christian religious architecture with simple rectangular plan with a single minaret. The mosque contains a main prayer hall, women’s prayer hall, mihrab and minbar.
