_Rijeka Islamic Center

Information

Rijeka Mosque is a mosque in Rijeka, Croatia built between 2009 and 2013. This mosque is the third in Croatia and the first in the city of Rijeka, fulfilling the long-standing aspirations of the local Muslim community to establish a proper space for worship. It is a collaboration between the sculptor Dušan Džamonja, who sadly passed away before it was opened, and architects Branko Vučinović and Darko Vlahović from the “ADB” bureau in Zagreb.

It is a structure of significant international artistic value, designed by the renowned late sculptor Dušan Džamonja, in collaboration with architects Darko Vlahović and Branko Vučinović. Džamonja initially created a miniature model that echoed the abstract forms typical of his sculptural work. Building on this vision, the architects translated the concept into a unique architectural expression. Through creative use of simple geometric forms, the result is a building that functions as a large-scale sculpture—serving both cultural and religious purposes—rather than a conventional architectural space.

Situated on a 10,800 m² plateau, the Islamic Centre was conceived as a monumental sculptural composition rising from a broad base. It has since become a visual landmark of Rijeka, Croatia’s busiest port, and is widely regarded as one of the most striking religious buildings in Europe. The design emphasizes spiritual expression over traditional ornamentation, intentionally avoiding typical Islamic decorative elements. This approach reflects the community’s desire to blend tradition with modernity and assert its place within contemporary society. The mosque’s construction was primarily funded by the State of Qatar.

Architecturally, the mosque features five interconnected domes and semi-domes, forming a unified volume constructed from reinforced concrete. Its façade is clad in ventilated stainless steel panels mounted on a metal substructure. A 23-meter-high minaret—comprising a central conical steel cylinder wrapped in a steel mantle—rises as the dominant vertical element of the complex.

The Centre itself spans four levels: a gallery, ground floor, and two upper floors. It houses a congress center, restaurant, guest apartments, and an underground parking facility.
