_Sultan Ismail Mosque, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

Information

Sultan Ismail Mosque is located in the area of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), International Campus, Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The mosque building is located in the central area of the campus which is the main building in terms of scenery and is located on a plateau. This makes the Mosque as a focal point in campus construction planning and its location in the central area is in line with the concept of Islamic learning where the Mosque is a source of finding and disseminating knowledge.

The design of the Sultan Ismail Mosque is high because it is the main building and the heart of UTM Campus Planning as a whole. To achieve the concept, the mosque has been designed as high as 3 floors with an underground basement and three pairs of towers of different heights to reflect the three levels in addition to its high appearance. One of the towers held an elevator for VIP visitors to survey the entire campus area.

In order to apply the features of Islamic architectural design with a combination of traditional Malay architectural design, the Sultan Ismail Mosque has been specially designed with both features. Moreover, to ensure the existence and construction of this mosque is truly in accordance with the laws and tenets of Islam, its construction is carefully planned to be in accordance with Islamic philosophy and concepts. Consultations and references were made in collaboration with YB Dato ‘Hassan Din Al Hafiz, the Chief Imam of Istana Negara at the time. The dome was chosen as the main roof because it is commonly used in the design of mosques and gives a different shape from the roofs of Malay houses around it so that it can be known that in the middle of the UTM campus is a mosque or vice versa other buildings are the connector of the mosque (The Extension of The Mosque). The shape of the dome of this mosque is based on the design of the Dome of Al-Aqsar Mosque in Baltul Maqdis. The finish of the Dome is made of green copper pieces “Torquoise” and stars as a landmark or symbol of Islamic greatness. The wall carvings are carved in the form of Islamic geometric motifs. The exterior wall finish of the entire building is shanhai plaster. The pillars of the mosque are covered with marble to beautify its shape. The floor finish for the main space for the male congregation on the second floor is carpeted, as is the space for the female congregation on the third floor. The other floor finishes as a whole are terrazzo, tiles and there is a bit of marble floor in the outdoor space on the second floor.
