Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque is the State Mosque of Perak, located in the heart of Ipoh, Malaysia. It is strategically situated near major civic institutions, including the Ipoh Railway Station, Ipoh District Police Headquarters, the Syariah Court, the Ipoh High Court, and the city’s main bus terminal.
This double-storey mosque is architecturally defined by a striking array of 66 oval-pointed domes, including a prominent central dome of similar shape. Each dome rests on an exposed cross drum beam and is crowned with a slender, needle-like pinnacle. These domes are primarily positioned on the upper tier of the building, where clerestory windows provide natural light to the interior spaces. The mosque houses a range of facilities, including the main prayer hall, a dedicated female prayer area, a conference room, administrative offices, a library, and support spaces such as storerooms, ablution areas, and washrooms.
At first glance, the mosque’s overall façade bears a resemblance to the iconic Parliament House in Kuala Lumpur. The building envelope features a modernist aesthetic, blending curved and pointed forms inspired by tropical organic shapes and enhanced with Islamic arabesque patterns. These patterns, made from molded concrete panels, are repeated rhythmically across the entire exterior, giving the structure a textured and ornamental finish.
On the eastern side of the mosque stands a square-based minaret, designed with a raised balcony and topped with a dome, completing the mosque’s distinctive silhouette.
