The Setia Raja Mosque, situated in the New Town district, is often hailed as one of the most beautiful mosques in the country. Officially opened in 1998, it forms a striking centerpiece along the town’s grand boulevard park.
A defining feature of the mosque is its unique vernacular architecture, closely tied to the Melanau ethnic identity and the cultural heritage of Mukah. Its most iconic element is the conical dome, inspired by the traditional Melanau headgear known as the terendak. Historically worn by Melanau women for sun protection, the terendak remains in use today, crafted in various styles and sizes by skilled local artisans.
The mosque is designed with a simple square layout on the ground floor, crowned by a large central dome shaped like a terendak, and flanked by four smaller domes at each corner. A distinctive, standalone minaret rises nearby, positioned at the center of a front roundabout and topped with Mughal-style pointed domes.
Inside, the mosque features a spacious, double-volume prayer hall that allows for excellent natural ventilation and lighting. This is enhanced by high clerestory and wall windows surrounding the hall. The interior of the main dome is lined with a vibrant aluminum roof plate and supported by an elevated ring beam connected by pointed arches.
The prayer hall is finished in a soft off-white plaster, adorned with delicate carvings and decorative patterns on the walls, columns, and ceiling. Several elegant chandeliers illuminate the space, including a grand centerpiece that hangs above the hall. The mihrab, marked by a prominent pointed arch, is finished with glass-glazed tiles and flanked by blind arches on the qibla wall. A beautifully carved mimbar, made from belian hardwood, stands independently within the prayer area, adding to the mosque’s refined interior.
