The Seremban Jamek Mosque is an ancient mosque in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. It is located on the corners of Jalan Yam Tuan and Jalan Dato’ Bandar Tunggal. Its architectural style is ancient Malaccan mosque style.
The construction of the Seremban Jamek Mosque was closely linked to the development of the Islamic religion in the town of Seremban, formerly known as Sungal Ujong. It was Intertwined with a river named Temiang River, believed to be the main route of the former Islamic preacher who had lived in the town. No other similar styled mosque has been built anywhere else in the state of Negeri Sembilan.
The site of the mosque is on waqf land or land endowed by the former local chieftain, Dato’ Bandar Hj. Ahmad Bin All, as well as the family members of Sheikh Abdul Kader, a well known local Islamic preacher. It was built originally as a rudimentary timber structure with a pyramidal roof in the early 1900s. Then in 1924, a detached pagoda-style minaret was built on the southeast side of the mosque site.
The initial square layout of the main prayer hall has been covered with an expanse overspill area, marked by a series of pointed arches on Corinthian columns. The covered area has also included the ablution area and other service areas. On the roof structure, only the main roof eaves and pinnacle have been restored with the use of new roof tiles and clerestory windows.
The four main posts also stand in the middle of the main prayer hall but had been replaced with concrete columns instead. On the front qibla wall, a spacious mihrab area has been provided with an Imam’s spot and access to the Imam’s room. A half portion of the space on the right has been equipped with an elevated platform, where a timber rostrum is used as a minbar.
