_Prince George Islamic Centre

Information

The proposed 7,000 sq ft Islamic Centre is thoughtfully integrated into its natural and urban surroundings, with the building massing rising gently alongside the topography of the site. Positioned at the northeast corner of 5th Avenue and Foothills Boulevard, the 3.39-acre property slopes downward to the east and north, bordered by a greenbelt to the west and residential zones to the north and east. The design respects the existing context by incorporating a 10-meter no-build setback along the northern and eastern boundaries, ensuring privacy and minimizing the impact on neighboring homes. A berm with established planting provides a natural screen along the east side, while a proposed new berm along the northern edge enhances the landscape buffer and contributes to a sense of enclosure for the planned central garden.

The site master plan supports phased development, beginning with a building and parking area in the southwest corner, leaving the heart of the site open for landscaped gardens and a small orchard. Future expansions are envisioned along the west boundary, with parking growing northward. Architecturally, the building is designed to harmonize with its surroundings, featuring a colonnade that separates the prayer hall and multi-purpose space, dynamic roof forms aligned with both the city grid and the Mecca axis, and a prominent minaret that serves as both a symbolic and functional element. Constructed primarily from sustainable, locally sourced materials such as timber, masonry, and metal cladding, the Centre will incorporate passive ventilation, daylight harvesting, and on-site stormwater management. Inside, the facility will include a multi-purpose hall, prayer hall, mezzanine for congregational overflow, and classrooms for weekend educational programs.
