Santos Mosque

Information

In the city of Santos, there is a growing and active Muslim community, formed since the 1950s by Arab immigrants, mainly from Syria and Lebanon. The Muslims of the Baixada Santista area are gathered by the Islamic Beneficent Society of the Litoral Paulista, with its headquarters at 309 Afonso Pena Avenue. The Society was founded in 1977. The spiritual leader of the community is Sheikh Mohamed el-Jubul.

The Santos Mosque is covered with white marble, both internally and externally. There are no decorative motifs inside. Its stained glass windows were decorated with passages from the Koran.

On the first floor is the administrative part of the society, as well as a large social hall. On the second floor, besides the temple and a visiting room, there is a library, where one can find books about the Arab and Brazilian cultures, and about the religion of both peoples. Since during services men and women pray separately, the mosque has a wing reserved for them.
