The city was an important commercial center in the Brazilian colonial period, and still preserves today a significant Luso- colonial architectural heritage. The cultural center, which has been in operation for only a few years, is located in an adapted residential building, so it does not have its own headquarters.
The population of Recife exceeds one and a half million inhabitants, but the number of Muslims is not more than thirty, which are some Arab foreigners who have established commerce there and some Brazilians who have reverted to Islam. The Islamic Center of Recife was founded in 1989, but had a critical phase, and was reinaugurated in 1997, in its current place.
