A group of Palestinians, led by the family of Said Abdallah, started the project to build the mosque in Jataí in the 1960s. Jataí is a small city in the interior of Goiás, near Rio Verde, and about 320 km away from the capital Goiânia. The city has about 90 thousand inhabitants and received its first inhabitants from the Middle East, mainly Lebanese, Syrians and Palestinians, in the 1960s and 1970s, who came to establish commerce in the city.
It was partially inaugurated in 1968, but due to lack of resources, the mosque was never completed. The mosque now has around 200 members, of which only 6 are Brazilians, the rest being Arabs or descendants. The mosque does not have a Sheik, but a Palestinian brother named Barjat plays the role of the mosque’s Imam. The mosque also offers religious classes taught by Muhammad Ali.
