The Green Mosque, also known as Khawaja Abu Nasr Parsa Mosque or Masjid Sabz, is located in Balkh, northern Afghanistan. It houses the Shrine of Khwaja Abu Nasr Parsa and derives its name from the turquoise-colored kashi tiles on its walls, locally referred to as Turkish Green.
Built in the Timurid architectural style, the mosque features a grand dome and two minarets. Eight openings in the dome allow natural light to enter, though some have cracked over time, exposing the inner structure. The base of the dome is adorned with muqarnas, while its lower section is decorated with intricate floral patterns and ceramic tiles.
The entrance portal is flanked by two bi-level porches, topped with minarets that have been heavily damaged, leaving only their bases and stumps. Stairs in the porch corners lead to the upper level, granting access to the minarets and roof. A small wooden door in the northeastern iwan leads into the dome chamber, crowned by a towering umbrella vault. Sixteen windows at its rim illuminate the space, where a small mihrab niche is set into the southwest wall.
Beneath the dome chamber lies a crypt, believed to contain the tomb of Abu Nasr Parsa. A supporting column was later added to stabilize the crypt vault. Outside, a stone platform holds tombstones of other saints, likely a later addition.
Despite its historical significance, the mosque has suffered extensive damage due to neglect and warfare. While the main courtyard remains intact, the rear area, including paving and gardens, has deteriorated. Many tiles have vanished, and the wooden doors are in desperate need of repair.
