The Lakemba Mosque, also known as the Masjid Ali Bin Abi Talib and officially the Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb Mosque, is Australia’s largest mosque. It was the first purpose-built mosque in Sydney and is located at 71-75 Wangee Road, Lakemba. Owned and managed by the Lebanese Muslim Association (LMA), Lakemba Mosque and the LMA offices are situated contiguously at the same address.
The iconic Lakemba Mosque, located in the suburbs of southwestern Sydney, was built in 1975. Its status as a new spiritual centre supports its role as a community centre and cultural institution in the Australian suburbs, which is aided by Saudi Arabian funds. Lakemba Mosque has remained the heart of the local community, drawing tens of thousands of people each week, with over 100,000 people attending significant events and anniversaries such as Eid festivities. The LMA, as custodians of Lakemba Mosque, have maintained it and transformed it into Australia’s first solar-powered mosque. The mosque’s design is based on the Shami (Syrian) architectural style, which is common in the region.
