_Kyzylzhar Central Mosque

Information

Since gaining independence, around 3,000 mosques have been built across Kazakhstan, including in sparsely populated regions. In the city of Petropavlovsk alone, approximately 10 mosques have been constructed. Among them is the Kyzylzhar Regional Central Mosque, recognized as part of the Geography of Holy Places of Kazakhstan.

Located in the city center, the mosque’s construction began in 2001. In 2004, under the initiative of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the project accelerated with support from prominent businessmen and local citizens. By 2005, the mosque was fully completed and opened for worship.

The mosque has three floors. The first floor houses administrative offices, a wedding hall, a dining room, ablution rooms, toilets, changing rooms, and a garage. The second floor features the main prayer hall for men, adorned with Quranic inscriptions around the mihrab and dome. The dome has 12 windows, symbolizing the months of the year. A stunning chandelier, made from pure crystal and crafted in Egypt and the Czech Republic, weighs 800 kg, has a 5-meter diameter, and cost 5 million tenge.

The third floor includes a women’s prayer area, a study room, and a library. A custom-designed carpet with 750 prayer mats allows for up to 1,000 worshippers at once. While 20–40 people attend daily prayers, Friday prayers attract 500–600 worshippers.

The mosque’s exterior features two towering 42-meter minarets and four smaller ones. The dome stands 32 meters high. At night, the illuminated mosque, with its beautifully landscaped courtyard, becomes a city attraction. Covering a total area of 3,700 square meters, with a usable space of 1,230 square meters, the Kyzylzhar Mosque stands as a symbol of faith and architectural beauty in northern Kazakhstan.
