Depending on how it is assessed, the King Fahd Islamic Cultural Center may be the largest mosque in the entire New World. It is also the largest mosque in Latin America. It was built in 2000 as a gift from the Saudi government on land given by the Argentinian government during a trip to Saudi Arabia. Its rigorously modern architecture has drawn criticism for its antiseptic appearance, especially for the odd minarets that more closely resemble prison towers despite being stunning in terms of scale and landscape.
The King Fahd Islamic Cultural Center provides one of the best opportunities to experience Islam in the New World despite its superficial appearances. A small portion of this is made up by the mosque’s elegant prayer hall with its modest silver and glass dome.
