_Hazrat Hyzr Mosque

Information

Hazrat Hyzr Mosque is located on the south of Afrasiab fort. Not far from Afrasiab settlement on the upland of Samarkand city the Mosque Hazrat Hyzr looks grand and bewitching. The mosque is situated near the memorial complex Shakhi Zinda and the local bazaar “Siab”. It is a fine example of folk architecture of Samarkand of that era. Externally it is quite different from the buildings erected in the era, such as Amir Timur, which gives it a special identity.

The first thing that caught one’s eyes is a memorial plaque with an inscription that the mosque last restoration was held under the tutelage of Islam Karimov, the President of Uzbekistan. Now the Mosque Hazrat Hyzr really looks very bright and colourful, and shining in different colours. Pedestal and garden were created around the mosque. Arsis well which situated next to mosque was cleaned and returned into old condition stairs which up to the mosque, stone walls which surrounded around the mosque, pedestal behind the mosque subterranean construction gutter which flow rain water and providing with electricity were repaired completely and cupola was returned original position.

It stands on a natural elevation where a steep stairs leads. The mosque consists of aivan and khanaka. The mosque’s aivan (an indoor canopy standing on the columns) is richly decorated with ornaments. There is an entrance from aivan to khanaka (a monastery for dervishes). Hanaka is square, with mihrab niche with the direction to Mecca in the middle and two hudzhry (monks’ cells) on the sides. The minaret is located separately. It consists of a trunk with a spiral staircase and a crowning lantern with ribbed dome. The façade of Hazrat Hyzr mosque consists of a high base with arched niches, quince, over which the west is closed guldastoy (corner semi-tower) with the brick facing. The aivan’s top includes a number of bricks. To the east, the system includes a mosque organically portal darvazahany with guldastami and beautiful carved gates. This series closes eastern minaret. Subtle feeling manifested in the performance of the master carved door. Here division and ornamentation are made with a shallow profile, which in this case well, because the contrast shadow quite clearly reveals the shape of the ornament, while preserving the integrity basis. The building is replete with dates that mainly indicate restoration time; majority of them belong 19-20th centuries. The Mosque Hazrat Hyzr has the high foundation with arch niches of iwan (arched premises). The columns support richly decorated and ornamented shed. Inside the khanaka (religious dwelling place), which has a square shape, one can see the mihrab, indicating the direction of Mecca. On both sides there are small prayer rooms. But the real adorning of the Mosque Hazrat Hyzr is a wonderful portal, gates of which are decorated with skilful carving. Nearby there is a so-called eastern minaret.

The painted dome of the mosque is inexpressibly beautiful. In the interior of the Mosque Hazrat Hyzr the wall painting and flowery unusual mural are prevailing. You can also see many dates, which indicate the historical events.
