The Galway Mosque is named by the Maryam Mosque or the Mosque of Mary. It is the first purpose-building mosque in Galway. The reason of choosing the name of Maryam for the mosque was mentioned in the reception of opening the mosque by the leader of Ahmadi Muslims community “Mary’s elevated status is reflected by the fact that the Quran says that true Muslims should develop the qualities of Mary and if they do so then they will be those who never cause harm or suffering to anyone. Every Ahmadi Muslim therefore seeks to instil within themselves the purity, nobility and piety of Mary
The design, assisted by the London based Muslim Architects, achieved the orientation of the Prayer Hall to Mecca within an octagonal form, while meeting the requirements of the Muslim Community regarding access and services for the use of the building as a Culture Centre. The elevations were designed to gently express the function and cultural purpose of the building, with the dome and minaret being the important signature features. The dome floats on a ring of glass and light reflects from the minaret opens. The external finish consists of smooth cut limestone and natural hydraulic lime render giving the building a unique finish. It shows a timeless classical elegance, a combination of traditional and contemporary, blending Muslim and Gaelic features to generate a welcome to all at the Mosque of Mary in Ballybrit, in accordance with the Ahmadiyya motto, Love for all Hatred for None.”
