_Carlton Islamic Centre (Albanian Australian Islamic Society)

Information

The Albanian Muslim community formed the Albanian Australian Islamic Society (AAIS) in 1963. The original Carlton house dwelling was used as a place of worship from 1963 to 1969. However with the increased immigration from Albania to Australia, there was a need to build a mosque and the Society opened the first Mosque in Melbourne in 1969-70.

Later on, major construction and extensions has been taken place, such as the minaret and ablution area constructions in 1994 and 1995.

According to the master plan that was developed in 1998, the mosque witnessed major changes that were implemented in stages under Desypher-a Melbourne based design office. The multi purpose hall was renovated in 2004. In 2007 more mosque interior renovation took place. This included the addition of a large ceiling dome, tall arches, decorative plasterwork and domed skylights. The width of the mosque increased in size and incorporated the unused land behind the minaret. The front facade was updated in 2010.

According to Desypher, the brief was to redevelop a collection of structures built since 1960s into a comprehensive and unified centre that caters for the community cultural needs. Working through several committee structures since the inception, Desypher had developed expertise in preparing, developing and implementing community based masterplan and executing projects to completion. The Design firm addressed inherent contextual problems by beautification of existing building and implementing gradual and scaled form articulation, using varied finishes including earthy render for masonry walls and commonly used corrugated steel. It re-worked the landscaping with reference to existing language to soften the built presence. The focus was on efficient use of the buildings, appropriately addressed specific Islamic circulation issues and rehabilitated dead areas.

Stage 4 of Community Centre and Mosque for The Albanian Australian Islamic Society (AAIS) was completed marking the final stage of the masterplan as first conceived in 1998. Desypher’s long association with the AAIS demonstrates a well thought out approach of a masterplan divided into manageable stages executed over time. The year 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the mosque.
