The Chai Wan Mosque or Cape Collinson Mosque is located in Chai Wan, Hong Kong, China. It is the fifth mosque built in Hong Kong.
The British Hong Kong government constructed this small mosque in 1963 to replace the old Muslim cementry. It was primarily used to offer funeral prayer. Initially regular prayers were not held there because the mosque was located in a very isolated area and no Muslims lived there except for a caretaker. However, as more and more Muslim families settled in Chai Wan, they started to perform their daily prayers at the mosque. The entire building has been renovated in 2005 by the Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong and air conditioners had been installed in the main prayer hall.
The architect of the Mosque was Mr. A.M. Wahab of the Public Works Department. The design is a rather strange eclectic mix of Modernist and Islamic architecture. The Mosque serves as a place of worship as well as a mortuary and funeral parlour and therefore has a dual function. Islamic features include an onion-shaped dome, Purdah screens, Narthax (foyer for taking off shoes), Mihrab (niche), Qiblar (prayer wall), Minbar (pulpit), Sahn (courtyard) and Sardivan (fountain or washing place). The gravestones in the cemetery have rounded or curved tops, some shaped as ogee or multi-foil ogee arches. The Star and Crescent symbol and Arabic
inscriptions reflect the religious identity of the deceased.
The Mosque is surrounded by mountains & wealthy greenery and enjoys a calm & quiet environment. Outside the prayer hall is an open space appropriate for little religious social occasions.
The mosque main space is mainly devoted to three prayer halls with luxurious white marble finishing. Outside the prayer hall is an open space suitable for small religious gatherings.
The Advisory Board of Antiques & Monuments Office designated Chai Wan (Cape Collinson Mosque) as a Grade 3 historic building on 17 May 2010.
