The construction of what is now Canberra’s largest mosque has been a decades-long process, one that had many twists and turns along the way, said leading member of the Canberra Islamic Centre committee Azra Khan. Canberra Islamic Centre has pure geometric volumes and clear shapes, which makes the large Islamic centre epitomises the modern identity of Australian Muslims.
Designed by the 4thD Planning and Design architectural firm in 2005, the site originally held a small community centre, which served as a social hub and place for prayer, however it became increasingly inadequate for the growing southside Muslim community.
The planning of the new expansion (2nd stage) started in 2011 and completed in 2018. Canberra Islamic Centre has hosts Monthly gathering Iftar during Ramadan, Eid celebrations. There are also a library, a hall hand facility for hire and Computer Lab including projectors.
