The hanafi mosque of Bourguiba is a Tunisian mosque located in Monastir Independence Street and dedicated to the first president of Tunisia, Habib Bourguiba. The architect who designed the mosque was Taieb Bouzguenda, who created a work inspired by ancient architecture, particularly the “Mosque Hammouda Pacha” in Tunis. The prayer hall, which is the focal point of the mosque, can accommodate up to 1000 worshippers.
This colourful mosque demonstrates typical Tunisian religious architecture complete with pink marble pillars and golden mosaics which are exquisitely preserved. This is evident in its mihrab, located in a semi-dome, is topped with a half arch decorated with a golden mosaic. The columns’ bows are made of pink marble, as well as the columns themselves.
This religious building is not only a place of worship, but also represents an example of 20th-century Tunisian architecture. The structure is adorned with intricate details and reflects traditional style with a touch of modernity.
