The Bab Ul Islam Mosque, also called the Tacna Mosque, is the most visible element of the Muslim presence in the city of Tacna, Peru. It is accompanied by a formal Islamic School for Muslim children along with the education of latest technologies.
The mosque was built by Sher Afzal Khan Barikoti, who was in charge of its construction that began in 2000 and concluded in 2008. He also built the Shah Wali-Ullah school which is also located next to the school.
Although there are other mosques in Peru, this is the most expressive of Islamic architecture in Peru and is considered the largest in the country. The building is approximately 1200m2 in size. It was constructed of brick masonry, covered with mortar and finished with white paint. Its architecture presents a complex volumetry, formed by the addition and superposition of prisms. The mosque has a minaret, a main dome and secondary domes.
