_Aziziye Mosque

Information

The Aziziye Mosque is a mosque in Stoke Newington, London.

The Aziziye Mosque began life as a cinema. Built in 1914 as the Apollo Picture House, it was designed in an ‘oriental’ style. In 1980, the local Turkish Muslim community acquired the building and gradually converted it into a mosque. The cinema auditorium functioned as the main prayer hall until a significant refurbishment created a new upper-level prayer hall. The exterior was also covered with Iznik tiles, a traditional Ottoman style.

The mosque was funded by the UK Turkish Islamic Association and the conversion began in 1983. Turks who had once felt reluctant to attend a ‘non-Turkish’ mosque welcomed the congregation as services were provided in the Turkish language rather than in English or Arabic. The total capacity of its Ottoman style mosque is 2,000 people. The institution includes a Halal butcher, a weekend school (Aziziye Education Centre), a wedding hall and a restaurant. The mosque has two domes sat on either side of the broad quad building, complete with two minarets emerging from their centres.
