One of the main avenues in the heart of Rabat is Avenue Mohammed V, where the mosque is situated in a prominent visual location. The Royal Palace is located just west and south of it. The structure is the fourth biggest historic mosque in Morocco, with a nearly square floor plan extending 74 meters on each side and a surface area of 5565 m2. With a huge rectangular courtyard (Sahn) enclosed by galleries and a prayer hall made up of three main transverse aisles that run parallel to the Qibla (south-eastern) wall, it features a layout that is fairly typical for Moroccan mosques. There are decorative pavilions at either end of the courtyard, lining up with the side entrances, evoking a comparable arrangement at the much earlier al-Qarawiyyin Mosque in Fes.
Additional rooms that were formerly utilized as student residences are now found in the mosque’s northern section. The minaret, which has ornate carvings on each of its four sides, is now on the southwest corner but used to be on the northwest. The mosque’s interior is decorated in a classic Moroccan style and includes several decorative gates.
