Biography / Info

Shahed Saleem is a practicing architect, design studio leader at the University of Westminster School of Architecture, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. His work with the Survey of London focuses on the urban history of Whitechapel. His research and practice explore the architecture of migrant and post-migrant communities, particularly their relationship to heritage, belonging, and nationhood.

Commissioned by English Heritage, Saleem authored The British Mosque: An Architectural and Social History, published by Historic England in 2018. With over a decade of experience designing places of worship, he regularly consults on academic and public projects concerning faith communities’ architectural and planning challenges. His design work has been nominated for the V&A Jameel Prize (2013) and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2016).

As the founder and director of Makespace, he has developed the practice’s expertise in residential, community, and faith buildings, based in London’s East End. His work extends into teaching, research, writing, and installations. Through his role at the Survey of London, he has gained significant expertise in heritage, public history, and community engagement.

Saleem and Makespace have received nominations for the Victoria and Albert Museum Jameel Prize (2013), the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2016), and commendations for the RIBA President’s Medal for Research and the Historic England Angel Award for Excellence in Heritage Research (2018).
