Bunbury Mosque and Muslim's Community Centre

History

This is a modern mosque built in the heart of Bunbury, Western Australia, with the help of the Islamic Association of Bunbury and through donations from the community.

The Muslim population in Western Australia, particularly in the Bunbury district, is growing, and is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. Hence there is an urgent need and a strong rationale for a ‘place of worship’ to practice their faith, and to bring the community together. Since its establishment in Jan 1999, the association has distinguished itself with its large, broad-based multi-cultural membership base, community-oriented objectives and its deep-seated beliefs in Islamic norms and practices. The association’s leadership remains strongly committed to creating and fostering an all-inclusive environment where all Muslims will be able to practice the religion in accordance with the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) (PBUH).

Urban and Architectural

The project includes a mosque and community centre, an outdoor activity area, and a kid's playground. Its architecture is modern and minimalistic using local bricks on the facades. The building is divided as follows:

  • 420 m² Roof area
  • 190 m² Main Prayer Hall and Minaret
  • 140 m² Amenities and Services
  • 170 m² Outdoor Activities area
  • 1670 m² Car Parking
  • 780 m² Paved
  • 70 m² Greenery

Description

This is the first Muslim prayer house in the South West of Western Australia, where the area is becoming more multicultural. Truly a multicultural gathering spot, run by The Islamic Association of Bunbury, it used to be confined to Muslims of Christmas Island and Cocos origins. Today, it is a meeting place for Muslims from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Iraq, Iran, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, South Africa, Ghana, Guinea Republic and more. Bunbury is about 173 kilometres south of Perth.
