Great Mosque 1er-Novembre-1954

History

The idea of building a large-scale mosque in Batna dates back to July 3, 1980, the construction began in 1982. This project was mainly carried out by several personalities of the city, the best known of which is the late commander of Wilaya I: Colonel Mohamed Tahar Abidi (Hadj Lakhdar), but also fighters such as Cheick Belgouil, Derghal Abdeldjabbar. It was built on a site of 42,200 m2 which was, before independence, a military airfield of the French army.

Urban and Architectural

The architecture is inspired by Islamic frescoes of a Moorish style but has a touch specific to the Aurès region that gives it a typical Chaoui character. The interior is decorated with superb arabesques and Koranic verses made in bas-relief and geometric ornaments and calligraphy that also adorn the two huge domes above the main prayer hall.
