Ulu mosque
History
The
construction of the mosque in 2009 and it was funded by the Turkish communities
in Netherland, but with the economic crisis the construction of the mosque was suspended
and there were years of uncertainty about whether this mosque will be completed
or not. In 2015 the mosque is opened.
Urban and Architectural
The design of the external façade of the
mosque is similar to the traditional style of the area due to the Dutch red
brick and the glass blocks with the steel gives a modern look for the design. The
interior design of the mosque was done by the famous Turkish interior designer
Semih Irtesh, and he paid lot of attention on light and how this building
radiates openness and transparency because this building is for everyone.
Description
The mosque is not only a place for Muslim’s
worship but also, it is a social and cultural center. It is a multi-story
building contains 5 floors and a basement. In the ground floor there are shops
and restaurants, in the first floor there would be meeting rooms, classrooms,
and gathering rooms for women and a quiet room for non-Muslims to contemplate, and
the basement there are meeting rooms and language classes, finally, in the
second floor and above is the mosque for 1500 worshiper and the upper 2
balconies are for women.
