Ottawa Mosque


History


The Ottawa Muslim Association was founded in 1962, and in early years members met in local churches and community members' homes. In 1973, it was announced that a new purpose-built mosque would be constructed on Northwest Avenue designed by the Toronto architect Ghazi Anwar Asad.

Construction began in 1977.

With a very distinct architectural design, the Ottawa Main Mosque is hard to miss while driving along Scott Street with its raised minaret (115-foot), and the central dome which is located over the prayer hall.

The building is made of brick with glass windows that were arranged in large semicircular expanses.

The interior includes a two-storey prayer hall, library and basement used for meetings, childcare and social events.
