History


On June 6, 2001, the Governor of Central Java formed a Coordinating Team for the Development of the Central Java Grand Mosque to deal with both fundamental and technical issues. Thanks to this lofty intention and close friendship, in a very short working time it was possible to determine the main decisions: land status, approval of funding from the APBD by the Central Java DPRD , as well as selection of the site and spatial program.
Then the construction of the mosque began on Friday, September 6 2002 which was marked by the installation of the first pile by the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. H. Said Agil Husen al-Munawar , KH. MA Sahal Mahfudz and Governor of Central Java, H. Mardiyanto . The installation of the first pile was also attended by seven ambassadors from friendly countries, namely Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Palestine and Abu Dhabi. Thus the eyes and attention of the international world also support the construction of the Great Mosque of Central Java.
MAJT was inaugurated on November 14, 2006 by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudoyono. The mosque with a land area of ​​10 hectares and a main building area for prayers of 7,669 square meters, the overall construction of this mosque cost IDR 198,692,340,000.

Even though it was only inaugurated on November 14, 2006 , this mosque had been functioned for worship long before that date. This magnificent mosque has been used for Friday prayer services for the first time on March 19, 2004 by Khatib Drs. HM Chabib Thoha, MA, ( Central Java Regional Office of the Ministry of Religion)

Urban and Architectural


The Great Mosque of Central Java is designed in a mixed Javanese, Islamic and Roman architectural style. Designed by Ir. H. Ahmad Fanani from PT. Atelier Six Jakarta won the MAJT design competition in 2001. The main building of the pyramid-roofed mosque is typical of Javanese buildings, but at the ends it is equipped with a large dome with a diameter of 20 meters plus 4 minarets each 62 meters high in each corner of the roof as a form of a universal Islamic mosque complete with one separate tower of the mosque building as high as 99 meters.

The Romanesque style can be seen from the building of 25 pillars in the courtyard of the mosque. The pillars in the style of the Roman Colosseum in Rome are decorated with beautiful calligraphy , symbolizing the 25 Prophets and Prophets, on the gate are written two sentences of the creed , on a flat field written Arabic Malay letters "Sucining Guno Gapuraning Gusti".

This Central Java Grand Mosque, apart from being prepared as a place of worship, is also prepared as a religious tourist attraction. To support this goal, the Grand Mosque is equipped with a guest house with a capacity of 23 rooms of various classes, so that pilgrims who want to spend the night can take advantage of the facilities.

Another attraction of this mosque is the Al Husna Tower or Al Husna Tower which is 99 meters high. The base of this tower contains the Dais Radio Studio (Islamic Da'wah) and TVKU transmitter . Meanwhile, the 2nd and 3rd floors are used as the Museum of Islamic Culture , and on the 18th floor there is a Muslim Cafe which can rotate 360 ​​degrees. The 19th floor is the viewing tower, equipped with 5 binoculars that can see the city of Semarang. At the beginning of Ramadan 1427 H, the binoculars at this mosque were used for the first time to see Rukyatul Hilal by the Central Java Rukyah Team using sophisticated binoculars from Boscha .
