White Cathedral Mosque
History
The White Mosque was built in 1913 according to the design of the chief provincial architect Andrei (Heinrich) Langer, who had Austrian roots. Author of dozens of projects, including several Tomsk churches, a synagogue, a drama theater. A. Langer designed the White Mosque in the 'modern' style with Islamic decor. The Tomsk "Mohammedan" community under the leadership of akhun Khamza Khamitov at the beginning of the 20th century experienced a period of upsurge, both spiritually and materially. They say that at every Friday prayer in the Red Mosque, a large amount of donations were collected for the construction of a second mosque, which was called the White Mosque in the city because of the color of the walls. The mosque on the Moskovsky Trakt was one of Langer's last works. In 1916, the provincial architect was called up for military service. The first official mullah of the White Mosque in 1917 was Yahya Nurmukhametov, who was sent to Tomsk by the Spiritual Assembly from Ufa. Prior to his appointment to Tomsk, Y. Nurmukhametov served as a mullah at the Orenburg Cossack army.
