Maral Ishan Mosque


History


It was built in 1893 as the Cathedral Mosque of the city of Kustanaya at the expense of the residents of the local Tatar Republic. The main donor for the construction of the mosque was the merchant Abdulvali Yaushev. After the death of Abdulvali in 1906, the mosque was supported by his younger brother Mullaghali Yaushev.

 In 1931, the mosque building was converted into a club and a cinema.

 During the Second World War, the mosque served as an evacuation point, where evacuees from Leningrad were accommodated.

 After the war, a cinema for young viewers was located in the building of the mosque.

 In 1986 The building was converted into a concert hall of the Kustanai Regional Philharmonic.

 In 1991 The building was returned to the Muslim community of the city, and general reconstruction was carried out.

 In 2002, the mosque was renamed in honor of the scholar Maral-ishana Kurmanuly.

 On April 17, 2018, the Muslim Spiritual Administration of Kazakhstan transferred the mosque to the balance of the Kostanay regional historical and local museum, as the mosque represents a historical and cultural value. The mosque is included in the register of historical and architectural monuments of the Kostanay region.

 In 2018, the reconstruction of the building began, which should return the mosque to its historical appearance. The color of the facade was changed, all minarets became taller than 3 meters, domes were restored to their original appearance, and the original door was restored. The restoration cost 140 million tenge

Urban and Architectural


The semi-circular projection of the two-story mosque ended with a balcony, from which Muslims were invited to pray. The height of the mosque is 6 meters and it is divided into two tiers: the upper one is for local nobles, and the lower one is for poor Muslims

 The height of the cupola is 18.89 m

 Number of minarets 1

 The height of the minaret is 22.75 m
