Modibbo Adama Mosque (Yola Central Mosque)


History


Four mosques have been on this location since 1841, each increasing importance as the local Muslim population grew. The first mosque was simply an open area enclosed by a wooden fence; the second was constructed out of haygrass and laterite stones; the third was constructed out of mudbrick. 

Urban and Architectural


The current mosque, one of Nigeria's biggest, is made of concrete. It also has a conference room, library, offices, an ablution block, and the Imam's compound, which includes residences for four wives in addition to the major prayer halls, which can accommodate 5,000 men and women.

The mosque's layout consist of a one story rectangular strcuture with clear void between the ground and the first floors and clear focal view of the minbar from all directions.

Description


The facades have semi-elliptical arches to protect from direct sun penetraion. The mopsque also has five domes for ornamentation purposes.  The mosque was built with ordinary materials.
