Masjidut Taqwa Islamic Centre

History

The "Mosque of Piety," which is the largest mosque and Islamic center in the Eastern Cape and proudly serves the Muslim population of Nelson Mandela Bay, is situated in Gelvan Park, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), South Africa. Masjidut Taqwa's grand opening took place on April 30, 1973, or Rabi ul-Awal 1393.

The Schauderville Moslem Association's (SMA) history, particularly the last half before to its dissolution, is directly related to the history of Masjidut Taqwa. In 1967, a decision was taken to build a Masjid with madrassah facilities because of the constantly growing Muslim population in the northern regions. An intense interest in SMA was aroused by this decision, and aid requests were frequently made. The towns of Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage were actively involved in this Masjid project by the middle of 1970. The Schauderville Moslem Association decided to turn the project over to the locals at that point.
