Agha Khan Jamat khana Mosque
History
Mosques started to be constructed in Stone Town in the second half of the nineteenth century by Muslim groups from the Indian subcontinent. The Aga Khan Mosque, also known as the Ismaili Jamatkhana, was constructed in Forodhani as early as 1838/1254 AH and is the oldest Shi'a mosque in Zanzibar. In 1905, it underwent a significant rebuilding and expansion.
Urban and Architectural
The mosque includes a prayers chamber, and offices on the ground floor. The mosque's entry doors are made of wood and include carved panels in the Gujarati style.
Description
During the reign of Imam Hasan Ali Shah, the first Nizari Ismaili Jamatkhana in Zanzibar was founded in the 1830s with the appointment of mukhis and kamadias. On August 16, 1905, Imam Sultan Mahomed Shah formally inaugurated the darkhana Jamatkhana.
