Ijumaa Mosque of Stown Town


History


One of Stone Town's biggest mosques; a typical example of arabesque architecture that derives its name from "Ijumaa" (the holy day of Friday). It is a Sunni mosque that holds the Friday prayers. Friday is a holy day for prayer in Islam, the predominant religion in Zanzibar.

Rectangular shaped mosque, at the heart of the muslim neighborhhod of Stone Town. Renovated compeletely into arabesque style. and the appearance of the significant mihrab known  to be found in Tanzania

Description


The mosque underwent a reconstruction about 20 years ago (1994) that gave it an exclusively Arab architectural and design impact.
