Linwood Islamic Centre
History
In Linwood, Christchurch, New Zealand, there is a mosque that practices Sunni Islam. The former Christchurch Bahai Center's premises, where the mosque was built in the beginning of 2018, had previously housed the Linwood Community Center. The structure was relocated to Linwood in the late 1980s from a Sunday School Hall in Highstead Road. It was Christchurch's second mosque to open. It is owned by the 2017-established Linwood Islamic Charitable Trust.
Description
The Linwood Islamic Centre and the Al Noor Mosque were shot at on March 15, 2019, as part of the Christchurch mosque shootings. Seven persons were killed and five others hurt in this attack, which resulted in 51 deadly shootings and 40 injuries altogether.
