Mosque of Brasília

History

The Islamic Center of Brazil was built early in the history of Brasilia, with the help of money from the embassies of the Arab countries there. This center functioned on a lot that today is located right in front of the current mosque, and consisted of large halls, kitchens, bathrooms and prayer rooms, but a fire in the 1980s caused the place to be abandoned. In parallel to this hall, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through its ministry of finance, began the construction of the Mosque of Brasilia, which was inaugurated in 1980, and today it belongs to Brazil at the same time that the Saudi kingdom, because it is the same that invests money in it, so much so that there is a plaque right in front of the mosque making it clear that it belongs to Saudi Arabia. That is why the sheiks of the mosque are usually of that nationality. After the Center burned down, all the Islam works in the capital moved to the mosque. It is not known exactly how many Muslims there are in Brasília, but the estimated number is between 3 thousand Muslims, about 90% of them are Sunni, the Shiites are only those who work for the Iranian Embassy, and some from the Lebanese Embassy.

Urban and Architectural

The Mosque is located in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. It occupies a large plot of land in the residential area of the city. The building covers 2800m2 and was inaugurated in 1980. The building, all painted white, is quite horizontal, which contrasts with the extremely high minaret.
