Mosque of Campinas

History

In the 1960s Lebanese Muslim merchants and also some from other nationalities started to get together to pray together, and by the end of the decade they had already decided to build the mosque and founded the Islamic Society of Campinas (SIC) and soon started the construction of the mosque. The mosque was then founded on April 26, 1977, making it the third oldest in the state. The mosque is currently led by Egyptian Sheik Mahmoud Abdelmotajali, who started giving sermons and classes earlier this year. The mosque was without a Sheik for a long time, due to local problems, but now it has a new one.

Urban and Architectural

The mosque is located in the city of Campinas, Brazil.  The building has an octagonal ground plan with double height, with a dome at its centre, and a minaret on the right, accounting for approximately 180m2.
