Mosque of Mar del Plata

Urban and Architectural

La Mezquita is located on Bolívar and Córdoba, downtown Mar del Plata, a city of port, casino and beaches with a little more than 600 thousand inhabitants, which in a good season can triple its population. It is a building with four floors crowned by a dome, which no one could enter by mistake. To the left is the minaret: the tower used to call to prayer. The doors and windows are oval and, between them, thousands of blue, light blue, yellow, white, green venecitas make the facade and draw arabesques. In the block there are stores, bus stops, many people walk around, but inside the oratory I do not hear a single noise coming from the street.

The facade of the mosque has been decorated with thousands of handmade Venetian tiles that make up figures with Arabic symbolism - which distinguishes it from the rest of the houses and stores in the area. The main entrance is intricately decorated by a potter and has a Moorish portal made by a carpenter and stained glass artist.

The whole thing seems to have been carefully planned to be considered a true mosque that has little to envy of any other mosque that might exist anywhere else in the world. Many people were involved in the design and execution of the work. Craftsmen and specialists in various trades undertook some challenging tasks. The facade of the building, for example, is made of thousands of handmade venecitas. Although most of the work was done in Mar del Plata, there were some tasks that, due to their difficulty, were left to foreign specialists.
