Al-Fattah Al-Alim Mosque
History
The mosque is located on the New Middle Ring Road in the New Capital and is considered the biggest mosque in Egypt and one of the mega mosques worldwide. It is built upon a total area of 44,55 ha (106 feddans). President Abdel Fattah El Sisi witnessed the inauguration ceremony of Al-Fattah Al-Aleem Mosque and the Nativity of the Christ Cathedral on the same day (on January 6, 2019).
Urban and Architectural
The Al-Fattah Al-Aleem Mosque, in the New Administrative Capital in Egypt, is considered Egypt's largest mosque. The mosque has a capacity of nearly 17,000 worshipers distributed over: 6,500 ground floors (the main court), 1,200 first floors of the “mezzanine floor” (ladies’ chapel), 7,000 outdoor areas, and 2,000 mini mosques. The mosque has 4 minarets with a height of 95 m (90 m high minaret + 5 m height of the crescent), and it is topped by 21 domes represented in: The main dome of the mosque (diameter 33 m, internal height 28 m, height from the ground 44 m and weight 5000 tons), which is the largest dome of a mosque in Egypt and Africa, in addition to a number of 4 secondary domes (diameter 11.75 m, internal height 10.25 m, and height 29 m from the ground), in addition to 6 small domes (above the main entrances and event halls), and 10 other domes (above the external walls).
The mosque has 6 entrances and 2 side entrances to the ladies' chapel on the first floor, "the mezzanine". The mosque also has a path for funeral ceremonies with a length of 408 m and a width of 28 m for conducting official funerals. It is equipped with giant edifices for the beginning and end of the path, in addition to edifices on both sides of the path. The mosque includes 2 buildings that include 7 event halls, located on both sides of the mosque, with a capacity of 2440 people.
Description
The mosque was built on an area of 106 acres, of which approximately 2 acres (8600 m²) is the area of the mosque building, and 7000 m² is an outdoor courtyard dedicated to prayer. Below it is a “basement” with a daily prayer hall, a “mini mosque” for men and women, rooms for memorizing the Qur’an, places for ablution, a library and administrative offices, and the rest of the external space is designated For buildings, roads and landscaping.
