Senai Airport Mosque

History

The Senai Airport Mosque was opened in 2003.

Urban and Architectural

The mosque's enduring edifice encompasses a handsome octagonal cloister-styled dome that sits on the entrance porch block and a similar but larger dome which sits on the main building. The domes are adorned with colourful metal-works possibly influenced by the Persian-Mughal architecture. A pair of Mamluk-inspired minarets flanks the main dome, elegantly sheathed in white. The mosque's striking identity has become a landmark of the airport's complex for passersby along the main airport road. However, the mosque’s architecture is in contrast with that of the airport's modern form.

A grand entrance porch is designed to welcome the mosque's visitors or worshippers with its voluminous open structure. Its space adds to the interplay of the flamboyant-pointed arched frames that help define the rib-shaped dome. Topped with an octagonal dome, the pattern of the lay-by area is placed together using Islamic geometrical pattern, known as Rub el Hizb,

The entrance is proceeded with a grand staircase which leads to the upper veranda area and ancillary block, where some facilities are located. Another two additional stairways are found on the left and right sides of the mosque to add to the grand staircase which is located at the front of the mosque. Meanwhile, at the ancillary block, the multifoiled arches with beautiful whitewashed plasterwork dominate the structure which is a space reminiscent of a Mughal mosque design.

In the main prayer hall, though the outer shape is an octagonal shape, the dome is finished in a more rounded form using intricate plasterwork with arabesque pattern work that dominates the main prayer hall interiors. Carved in beautiful plaster work detailing, the interior creates a pleasant and ornate ambiance to the space. During the day, the main prayer hall is illuminated by natural light from the glass walls.

The front qibla well, formed by a series of multifoil arches, is earmarked with a larger multifoil arch encircled by a frame wall. The profound mugarnas finish is seen in the larger mihrab niche that is partially occupied with a wooden pulpit platform in the middle. The smaller mihrab niche has been totally hidden and covered.
