Tinggi Mosque


History


Due to the mass migration and most of them are Muslims, a mosque was built in the area in 1897.

At the end of 1928 during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Shah (30th Sultan of Perak), this mosque was inaugurated and received recognition from Sultan Iskandar Shah (30th Sultan of Perak) to be used as a place of worship for Muslims.

For your information, loyal readers of orangperak.com, almost the entire structure and walls of this mosque are built of wood and the roof is made of zinc. With regard to the four -storey azan tower, it was built in 1929 and later the mosque was known as the High Mosque.

This is because, it is likely that this is the tallest mosque in Perak at that time which made the name of the High Mosque was raised as the title and name of this mosque.

It is informed that this mosque is no longer used for daily worship because there is another new mosque that was built in 1966 which was named as Al-Athar mosque which is located next to this High Mosque. There is also a Maahad Tahfiz Al- Akhlak Al- Islamiah Masjid Tinggi which was built near the mosque.

 

Urban and Architectural


The mosque was designed using the prevailing style at the time and also known as a Nusantara Mosque, which simply means the vernacular architecture of the region, The roof is made up of three layers with a pyramid-shaped dome. As the building is a mosque, it is oriented facing the giblat, The prayer hall is divided into two: the main hall, as the main space to perform the prayers and the serambi which is on the front side as the entrance to the mosque, The serambi is often used as an overspill area to perform prayers when the min hall is fully occupied. There are two ablution areas situated al the left side of the mosque, a well and an ablution pond. There is also a three storeyed tower that was built and used to call for azan and people have remarked that they can hear the call for prayer as far as two miles (three kilometers) from the mosque.

Description


Masjid Tinggi Bagan Serai is an unusual wooden mosque with a zinc roof constructed in 1897 and formally inaugurated by the late Sultan Iskandar of Perak in 1928.

The unique design is said to be modelled on mosques found in Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. During colonial times there was an influx of migrants from Banjarmasin who helped to establish rice growing in this region of Perak. The street next to the mosque is called Jalan Banjar.
