Jamek Laksamana Hang Tuah Mosque

History

Jamek Laksamana Hang Tuah Mosquet was ready for use in 1850. The founder of this mosque is known as Wan Chilek. The tower next to the mosque was built in 1909 as a place to chant the call to prayer.

In 1967, some changes were made in this mosque. The originally tiled roof has been converted to an ardex type roof. Asbestos ceilings have been installed and the stairs of the mosque have been renovated. The following year around the laterite pond were installed pipes and a protective roof for the ablution place.

The lack of space for a place of worship has led to additional work being done in 1973 and 1976 on the back of the mosque.

On 11 May 1982 at 2.30 am, a fire broke out at the mosque due to a short circuit. There is some damage to the front, which is to the left of the mosque, store and roof. However the original structure of the mosque was not affected. The cost of repairing the mosque is RM70,000.00 while the state government provides assistance of RM5,000.00 with the rest obtained through philanthropists and the local community.

In an effort to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims, in 1991 the state government provided an allocation of RM100,000.00 to build an additional building to the right of the original mosque building.

In 2002, conservation work (conservation) was carried out by the Department of Museums and Antiquities in an effort to preserve the original architectural elements of this mosque.
