Complex of Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun


History


It was built in the 1280s in less than two years by al-Mansour Seif al-Din Qalawun This ensemble marks the beginnings of a new architectural type which fulfilled several functions. This consists of a mausoleum, a madrasa and a hospital (maristan). Located on the main artery of medieval Cairo, on the site of the old Fatimid western palace.

Urban and Architectural


The main facade facing the street is 67 m long and 20 m high. Built in stone, it is punctuated by a large arcature supported by marble pillars, pierced with bays decorated with geometric interlacing. An epigraphic banner that runs the entire length gives the name of the sponsor, his titles and the date of construction.

The main entrance to this magnificent complex is located on Al-Muizz Li-Din Allah Boulevard. The two sides of the door are covered with copper plates pierced and engraved with beautiful ornaments. This entrance opens onto a long corridor that separates the mausoleum mosque from the madrasa.

Amir Alam al-Din al-Shuja'i, who was an expert in architecture and engineering, supervised construction. He mobilised the workforce and forbade them to work in any other place in order to accelerate completion of the building
