Lakemba Mosque

History

In the late 1960s the fledgling LMA, began by a group of Lebanese immigrants, established a community prayer hall and Sunday school to teach the basics of Islam. The LMA realised the need for a mosque to help facilitate the religious needs of the growing community and purchased land to build the first purpose built mosque in Sydney.

In 1972, the construction of the Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb Mosque was completed in Lakemba, NSW, and would go on to become a defining establishment of the Australian Muslim community.

For over 45 years Lakemba Mosque has continued to be the heart of the local community and hosts a growing congregation of thousands of people every week, with over 100,000 people attending major events and milestones, such as Eid celebrations. As caretakers of Lakemba Mosque, the LMA continue the upkeep of the mosque and have successfully transitioned it to be the first solar-powered mosque in Australia.

Urban and Architectural

The iconic Lakemba Mosque, located in the suburbs of southwestern Sydney, was built in 1975. Its status as a new spiritual centre supports its role as a community centre and cultural institution in the Australian suburbs, which is aided by Saudi Arabian funds. Lakemba Mosque has remained the heart of the local community, drawing tens of thousands of people each week, with over 100,000 people attending significant events and anniversaries such as Eid festivities. The LMA, as custodians of Lakemba Mosque, have maintained it and transformed it into Australia's first solar-powered mosque. The mosque's design is based on the Shami architectural style, which is common in the region.
