San Cristóbal de Las Casas is a complex, dynamic city, among other reasons for hosting a variety of interpretations of the sacred, making it into a space disputed by different religious groups, the most recent being Muslims. The presence of Islam in the Los Altos region of Chiapas is closely related to the expulsion of Indigenous converts to Protestantism from San Juan Chamula. In San Cristóbal de las Casas, there is currently a population of approximately 300 Muslims, most of them from Chamula.
