_Lorica, una colonia árabe a orillas del Río Sinú (Lorica, an Arab colony on the banks of the Sinu River)

Description

This article studies the circumstances of the arrival of the first Arab immigrants to Colombia since the end of the 19th century, as well as their most important economic activities. The research chose Lorica as a point of reference, as it was one of the most prosperous towns in the Sinú sub-region during the 19th century and the first decades of the following century, where one of the most numerous Arab communities in Colombia was established. By the middle of the 20th century, the sedimentation of the Sinú River and the construction of the first trunk roads led to the commercial decline of Lorica. This problem caused the departure of many Syrian-Lebanese traders, who left for more dynamic cities such as Barranquilla, Cartagena or Montería, in search of new business opportunities and a better education for their children. The paper presents some case studies as empirical evidence of the rise and social acceptance of immigrants and their descendants in the Colombian Caribbean.
