The Arab presence in Latin America dates back to the arrival of the Spaniards and it is from the end of the 19th century onwards that the large community of Arab origin, mainly composed of Syrians, Lebanese and Palestinians, arrived. In this context, Latin America experienced different waves of Arab migration from the Middle East. The first was between 1870 and 1900, due to Turkish domination that led many Arabs to seek other more welcoming lands; the second wave was between 1900 and 1914 because of the British and French occupation of the Middle East, and also as a consequence of the First World War; and finally, the third wave occurred as a result of the occupation of Palestine in 1948 and from 1974 onwards with the civil war in Lebanon.
