Mosque of Ahmad Ibn Tulun
History
Built between 876 and 879, the Ibn Touloun mosque is the oldest in the city. It still retains its original features, in addition to the temple with the largest extension in Cairo. According to the historian Al Maqrîzî, the construction of the building began in 876; an inscription dates its completion in the year 265 of the Hegira, that is to say the year 879 of our era.
Urban and Architectural
The mosque has impressive dimensions. It is surrounded by a huge courtyard that will immerse you in a quiet atmosphere, in the heart of the city. Once inside, you can see a large square patio, 90 meters long, with a large central fountain.
One of the most unique parts of the mosque is its minaret. It was built in 1296, as a special independent structure, surrounded by an external staircase.
Description
The effect of the Great Mosque of Samarra is evident in the minaret. built in the western ziyada, seen most obviously in the fact that the staircase winds itself around the outside body of the minaret and not within the interior, as is typical of most mosques in the Islamic world. This plan is identical to the minaret of the Great Mosque of Samarra, known for its spiraled shape.
