Jami Kampung Baru Inpak Mosque

History

Many of the Arab and Indian traders and merchants settled in this area which later became Batavia . Traders from India built a mosque in the area to fulfill their need to perform their prayers. The Jami Kampung Baru Mosque was built by Syekh Abubakar who is a Muslim merchant from India and who lives in the area. Construction work began in 1743 and was completed in 1748.  In a Dutch language article in 1829 the Kampong Baru Mosque was also called Moorsche Tempel ( Temple of the Moor ). Maybe this is where the historical origins are that this mosque was built by Moorish Muslims, then the term Moorishthese identified as Indian Muslims. Although the Moorish terminology itself is used to identify Muslim ethnic groups in North Africa (Morocco and its surroundings) who in their time succeeded in conquering Europe and establishing an Islamic empire in Andalusia (Spain).

Urban and Architectural

Currently, the mosque building is no longer in its original form, except for the central frame which is square in shape, with carvings of bunches of grapes and several pillars in the windows. In the late 1980s, old buildings in Pekojan were demolished for flyovers. The Kampung Baru Mosque was also damaged even though it actually has historical and architectural values. The basic design of this mosque is square with overlapping roofs, the upper roof is pyramidal. The shape of this mosque resembles a traditional Javanese house, where there are usually 4 pillars in the center of the building as a support for the pyramid-shaped roof.

This mosque has an area of about 1,050 square meters, the floors are white, green and red. In the ceiling of the mosque hangs an antique lamp that has existed since the mosque was founded. This mosque once had the most beautiful minbar, made of carved wood. This pulpit has now been replaced. The original pulpit is kept in the Jakarta History Museum .
